It is a fact that Halo 5: Guardians will have an update for Xbox One X that will take advantage of its power to run in 4K; however, many fans have wondered about the possibility of having HDR support. If you are interested in this feature, you should know that it will not have real support.
In an issue of NeoGAF, Frank O’Connor, manager of the Halo franchise, explained that with this Halo 5: Guardians patch will be rendered at 4K and will present textures and other higher quality materials. That said, the game will not have true support for high dynamic range images, although those who play on screens with HDR technology will notice “significant” improvements.
“Yes you will see significant benefits when running on HDR equipment, and of course the game runs in 4K and takes advantage of higher resolution textures (will be a major download) and other materials,” said the creative.
Later, O’Connor explained that this is so since Halo 5: Guardians was developed at a time where HDR systems were not so sophisticated so it was not meant to be compatible. Thus, while there are ways to implement it, they preferred to focus time and resources on other improvements.
“The first reason [for not having real HDR support] is because it’s not a simple switch; you have to retouch all the content (…) The second – from my perspective is the most important – is that Halo has a symmetry of colors in the design of levels as an aspect of balance and matchmaking. One side is blue and the other red, often in subtle ways. Already we balance for this difference and apply retroactive changes would be a problem on a large scale. For this reason, we made the decision to focus on other aspects of the game, “he explained.
