US citizens who are planning to apply for their passport or for renewal must do so before January 2018.
According to the USCIS recommendations, processing times are shorter between September and December of each year.
Each year the State Department declares September as the month of the passport, as demand for this vital document is shot before the new year until the summer.
It is for this reason that the government recommends to avoid delays to apply as early as anticipated at the end of 2017. Last year more than 18 million passports were issued according to official figures marking a historical record.
However, it is expected that by 2017 the number of passports will reach 20 million due to the entry into force of the Real ID Act in 2018.
The law, passed in 2005, requires that driver’s licenses comply with certain safety standards to be considered a valid federal identification to board a US aircraft.
If this new type of driver’s license is not issued by a compatible state then the passport will be the only document valid for travel.
What do you need to get your passport? If it is your first time you must introduce yourself. If you apply to renew it you do not have to appear in person. The renewals can be done by mail before the passport has expired.
The value to apply or renew is $ 110 dollars plus a processing fee of $ 25 dollars.
