Singing solo has finally paid off for former American Idol star Kelly Clarkson, whose Piece by Piece effort has earned her a third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. This is coming after a six-year absence from the charts, with the 2009 hit All I Ever Wanted being her last No. 1 album.
Despite Piece by Piece taking a spot better than Clarkson’s 2011 No. 2 Stronger album, Stronger however did better in terms of sales. In the first week, Piece by Piece sold 97,000 copies compared to the impressive 163,000 copies of Stronger sold in the first week. This was however even lower than the 255,000 copies recorded by All I Ever Wanted when it hit No. 1 in 2009.
Though Clarkson’s Piece by Piece made it to the top, it was only 1,000 copies away from the sales recorded by the No. 2 on the Billboard 200 – the soundtrack of Fifty Shades of Grey, which moved 96,000 copies. Other albums that made the top five in the latest Billboard 200 include 1989 by Taylor Swift (No. 3), If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late by Drake (No. 4), and X by Ed Sheeran (No. 5).
Taking five steps down to No. 6 is Dark Sky Paradise by Big Sean – last week’s No. 1. The current Billboard 200 ranking indicates that Kelly Clarkson has matched Carrie Underwood’s record of three No. 1 albums by a former American Idol winner.
Piece by Piece is the first non-Christmas CD by Kelly Clarkson since 2011.
